Event posted by Maureen Colburn on June 23, 2010
July 1, 2010 - 19:00 - 21:00

Citizen Architect: Sam Mockbee and the Spirit of the Rural Studio
Directed by Sam Wainwright Douglas
http://citizenarchitectfilm.com

Screening/Discussion starts at 7, free tickets available at Bazinet Garden Lobby desk starting at 6

This documentary chronicles the work of late architect and teacher Samuel Mockbee and the Rural Studio, a radical design/build program he co-founded at Auburn University in Alabama. Mockbee inspired a generation of future architects by working with them in one of Alabama's poorest counties, creating innovative structures from salvaged materials for the betterment of the community. The film features numerous interviews with Mockbee, along with such architectural heavyweights as peter Eisenman, Michael Rotondi, and Cameron Sinclair (2010, video, 60 minutes).

A discussion follows the screening, featuring panelists Maureen Colburn, cofounder of the Minneapolis-St. Paul chapter of Architecture for Humanity and architect with LHB in Minneapolis; Paul Neseth, cofounder of Locus Architecture in Minneapolis; and James Wheeler, intern architect at Gulf Coast Community Design Studio in Biloxi, Mississippi.
